AC maintenance is vital in order for your air conditioner to function correctly

AC maintenance is vital in order for your air conditioner to function correctly and efficiently.  Regular cleaning and changing of the filters can reduce the need for repairs and prolong the life of your air conditioning unit.  If you do not keep up with maintenance, you could come across some costly repairs.

Here are three things you can do to keep up on AC maintenance:

  1. Change the filters. Air filters can get clogged up with dust, dirt, debris and leaves.  Just like any kind of air filter, when it is clogged, normal airflow is decreased, which prevents the air conditioner from doing its job.  Some air filters are reusable and can just be cleaned and put back in once dry.  Other filters need to be discarded and replaced with a new one.  This is an inexpensive way to maintain an air conditioner and keep it working at its full potential.
  2. Keep the coils clean. There are two main coils on an air conditioning unit: the evaporator coil and the condenser coil.  These also need to be cleaned to function properly.  The coils can be easily seen without taking anything apart, so just be observant if any leaves, grass clippings, dirt, mud or foliage start to collect on them.  It’s also a good idea to make sure the coils don’t bend too much or become kinked.  If they do, they will not be able to pass the proper airflow through them.
  3. Keep the drains clear.  You may want to push a stiff wire through the drains and coils to make sure they are not getting clogged.  You can add this to your checklist of routine AC maintenance.
